Jonathan Clements (1963-2025) was a wise writer about financial matters. He composed his own obituary, published on 22 Sep 2025 as "Farewell Friends". It begins:

If this post is appearing, it means I’ve succumbed to cancer or one of its side effects. Please don’t feel sad for me. I’ve had a life filled with love, great experiences and wonderful career opportunities. Despite my demise at a relatively young age, I consider myself beyond fortunate. ...

From Ron Lieber's eulogy, "Five Pearls of Wisdom From a Legend of Financial Writing", a summary of Clements' advice:

  • Doing the thing you’re passionate about is overrated — for the young.
"...focus on making and saving money [so] you can spend the last quarter or more of your career worrying less about money and more about happiness at work"
  • Winning isn’t everything, but not losing is really something.
"Minimize subtractions." — avoid high-fee investments, advisors, annuities, etc — reduce risks, appropriately
  • The taxman favors the patient.
... save as much as you can in tax-advantaged accounts
  • Don’t just stand there. Do something.
“Want to enjoy life more? Put down the remote, back slowly away from the television, and do something where you’re a participant, not an observer.”
  • No, really. Do something!
“There is a reason the world’s gardens are full of benches that nobody ever sits on. We aren’t built for leisure or built to relax. Rather, we are built to strive. ... ”
Clements ran a sub-3-hour marathon, besides having countless other adventures in his sadly shortened, wonderfully productive life. May his memory be a blessing ...
